| A city and port in the north-west of England on the northern bank of the Mersey estuary. It is the centre of the county of Merseyside. It flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries due to the slave trade between the New World and Africa. In the 19th century it was the port for the emigrants to the United States, not only from England, but also from Scandinavia and Germany. Its docks and berths spread 12 km along the Mersey. Liverpool deteriorated enormously after the Second World War. It has two large cathedrals, beautiful public buildings and a university. However, transatlantic travellers now go by plane and cotton is no longer the king, unemployment is high and the docks are half empty and have been claimed for building a park.
For many people, Liverpool is famous because the Beatles were born in this port and started their career in the Cavern Club of the city.
