| A city in the United Kingdom, in the south of England. This is the national capital and the country’s largest metropolitan area, spreading on either side of the Thames. The Romans founded Londinium in 43 AD, in what is now the “square mile” of the city, the heart of the capital’s business quarter. The main parks are in the west of London, the largest of which is Hyde Park, with the famous Kensington gardens. The river Thames winds through the city and is crossed by six road bridges between the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament.
Few cities are the cultural and commercial centre of a nation like London, and this explains the enormous affluence of visitors, both tourists and businesspeople. Visitors discover a cosmopolitan city of great traditions which have changed little throughout the centuries, for example the changing of the guard in Buckingham Palace.
